Welcome to the 21C Ed Grad Wiki
The purpose of this wiki is to brainstorm about what a graduate program in education for 21st century learning should look like. Feel free to add ideas and share.
A. Ideas from recent grads about what would make the experience better and more useful:
Recent grads please give some info about your experience, whether you think it prepared you well for 21C teaching, and what you would do differently if you were running a teacher ed grad program.
Lots of Digital Education. In my experience, as a current graduate from an Education masters, I was teaching the professors about 21st century skills. We should be teaching our teachers how to integrate technology into the classroom through modeling.
One of my pet peeves as a current graduate student in an education program paired with certification in instructional technology is that there is too much emphasis on the ideology, and not enough "doing". I feel that we have learned theories to death in our undergraduate programs. I believe graduate programs should and must take learning to the next level - take those theories into application through action research, active collegial discussion, and personal learning communities. I also agree with previous commentator in regards to having knowledgeable instructors; modeling is an excellent way to teach about 21C skills but unfortunately many higher ed professors from personal experience are unfamiliar with 21C and we students end up teaching them.
B. Ideas from all teachers specific to different areas of a quality 21C teacher education:
Should PLN building for personal professional development be a standard piece of Ed School requirements?
Teachers should learn to assess students in an ongoing and formative manner consistent with the real-time and fluid nature of live interaction via the Web.
Assessment should be constant re-designated to and personalized by the development and experience of the learner.
Integration of Web 2.0
Peer collaboration through online resources, Nings, Faceboook, Twitter, and other social- learning networks.
Teachers should create personalized growth plans in technology use and integration. Plans should be aligned with educational beliefs and current school district's mission statement and technology plans. Growth plans should focus on specific areas of improvement or interests, which are broken down into measurable goals with short term and long term deadlines. Growth plans should also be paired with reflection in the form of online blogs and digital portfolios.
